To celebrate a classic American holiday, you need to have a classic American dessert. But even the classics can be made better with a creative remix, and our Apple Crisp with Topknot Pretzel Crumb Topping is a perfect example. It has all the sweet cinnamon flavors you know and love from a traditional Apple Crisp, but with a pretzel crumb topping that takes it to new heights.
Ingredients:
Pretzel Crumb Topping
- 1 Eastern Standard Provisions Co. Topknot Signature XL Soft Pretzels
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 1/4 cups light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 8 oz butter, cubed
- 1 cup oats
Filling
- 6 medium sized apples
- 3 tablespoons Eastern Standard Provisions Co. French Toast Sugar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Instructions
Pretzel Crumb Topping
- Cut cold butter into small cubes
- Cut Topknot into 1/4 inch pieces
- Put all ingredients into stand mixer* and, using paddle attachment, mix until it just starts to come together, but is still crumbly. Mixture should look like wet sand.
*If no stand mixer, you can use the tips of your fingers to bring the mixture together.
Filling
- Thinly slice apples.
- Toss apples with the sugar and lemon and spread evenly into 9x9 baking dish.
- Sprinkle the pretzel crumb topping over the apple in a nice thick layer.
- Bake at 350 degrees 45-55 minutes until golden brown on top and bubbly.
Note: We use Granny Smith apples for tartness, and Honeycrisp for sweetness.
